BILLINGS, MT (May 6, 2011) –It’s May, and time to celebrate aspiring and current women riders, as the road-trip season kicks off during this month’s Garage Party. Beartooth Harley-Davidson/Buell is hosting its free, women-only party on Wednesday, May 25th, from 6:30 until 9:00 p.m. The main goals are to celebrate the 3rd Annual Women Riders Month, dispel fears women associate with riding motorcycles, and inspire them to get behind the handlebars of their own bikes to discover an entirely new adventure.

Certified Rider, Coach and Trainer, Terry Funk, of Montana Motorcycle Rider Safety, is scheduled to appear at this month’s party to alleviate fears associated with riding motorcycles. His training segment will address safety issues with emphasis on breaking, cornering and swerving. To help plant a few seeds of inspiration, Beth Benton, Radio D.J., for Planet 106.7 in Billings, will be introduced as this season’s spokesperson. Beth has 2½ years know-how sitting behind a rider, with limited dirt bike experience behind the handlebars. She will share her journey as she becomes a full-fledged member of the growing trend of women riders. From choosing the perfect bike on the showroom floor, to attending an upcoming Basic Rider Safety Course in June, then testing and securing her motorcycle endorsement, there’s no doubt that Beth will provide encouragement and inspiration to all riders along the way.  Beth’s final phase is scheduled for completion when she masters her first ride during the Beartooth Harley-Davidson/Buell’s annual Father’s Day Fun Run scheduled on Sunday, June 19th.

Although women ride motorcycles for the same reasons men do--freedom of the ride and the adventure—they also glean an overall sense of empowerment—they are no longer behind the rider, but behind the handlebars.   These are just a few of the reasons that the percentage of women riders is growing. According to the Motorcycle Industry Council, it is estimated that 23% of all U.S. motorcyclists are women—who’ve purchased both new and used bikes. For Harley-Davidson®, 14% of their new bike sales are attributed to women who are getting on the saddles of their own Harley-Davidson® motorcycles. Additionally, Harley-Davidson® turns dreams of riding into a reality, by offering women tips, advice and the confidence they need through an online tool entitled Harley-Davidson® Roadmap to Riding®.
